Tipu Sultan, also known as The Tiger of Mysore (1750-1799), ruled the Kingdom of Mysore after his father’s death in 1782 until his demise in 1799. The Fourth Anglo-Mysore War was fought between Sultan Tipu and combined forces of Britain with Mysore’s neighbours. On 4th May 1799, the wounded Sultan retired under the gateway of the inner fort, his Horse having sunk under him, his people raised him up and placed him on his Palankeen. From which, upon the appearance of some European Soldiers the wounded sultan came out from his Palankeen, grasping his sword, though almost exhausted from blood loss, wounded one of them above the knee who had tried to seize his sword belt. While a European officer on the right commanded the infantry line to take aim and fire, shot Sultan through the head, which led to his instant death.

The Painting was made by a British artist Henry Singleton (1766-1839) in 1802 with the technique of stipple and etching through which several prints of a painting are acquired, The British Museum London holds one such print. The Painting also has various versions by different artists.
